> Beautiful Cryptocoryne from India
> Green vein with brown-red leaf
> middle zone
The spiral water trumpet from southwestern India is an extremely polymorphic species. Two new beautiful shapes came onto the market a few years ago with 'Red' and 'Tiger'. They are rarely available in Europe. As a submerged plant, Cryptocoryne spiralis 'Red' produces dark brown-red, band-shaped leaves with a smooth to curled margin. The midrib is predominantly vibrant green and contrasts nicely with the brown-red margin with darker marbling. Under the same conditions, the leaves of 'Red' have a narrower shape and become longer than those of Cryptocoryne spiralis 'Tiger' which often lacks the green midrib and has a more pronounced stripe pattern. Until now, the longest leaves of Cryptocoryne spiralis 'Red' have reached a length of about 34 cm, but the plant can grow considerably larger over time.
It turns out that 'Red' is just as easy as several other forms of Cryptocoryne spiralis as an aquarium plant. Medium lighting and a nutrient-rich substrate are very beneficial, as is CO2 addition. Unlike many other Cryptocorynes, the Spiral Water Trumpet is not a low-light plant. Rather, intense lighting enhances the striking colors of Cryptocoryne spiralis 'Red'. Over time, daughter rosettes appear at the base of the plant's main leaf rosette forming a large tuft with a strong root system. They can be cut off for propagation. We have not noticed long-walkers yet.
Cryptocoryne spiralis 'Red' certainly comes into its own as a solitary tuft with many leaves in the middle of not too small aquariums. It is an eye-catcher with its brown-red and green leaves and contrasts well with light green plants.
