Why use aquasoil?
Your aquarium substrate has various important functions. It is important that the aquasoil you use both provides support for aquarium plants and is suitable for fish which like to dig. Every good soil also contains cleansing bacteria which help break down harmful substances. Not all soils contain these. It is always important to be aware of the qualities of the soil that you're buying.
How much aquasoil do I need?
Of course, it's a real nuisance to have more substrate than you need. Having too little substrate for your aquarium isn't what you want either. There's a very simple way of calculating exactly how much aquasoil you need for your project:
- Measure the length and depth of your tank in cm.
- Imagine how thick you want your substrate layer to be. (Pro tip! Increase the thickness from front to back for a nice visual effect)
- Multiply the length by the depth and the thickness of the soil and divide by 1000.
Now that you've calculated how much substrate you need to order, you can take a look at the different aquasoils available.
Aquasoil types
You'll find various brands of soil in our online shop.
Although these three brands are all very high quality, there are slight differences between them.
JBL aquasoils
JBL creates the most ideal conditions for your aquarium water. This is precisely what most plants require. JBL aquasoil is not water neutral. Do you use this aquasoil? Then your water's pH value is slightly acidic. This ensures that your water resembles the water often found in tropical areas. The total hardness of the water (GH) and the carbonate hardness (KH) are affected too. Both values will be lower.
ADA aquasoil
ADA's 100% organic aquasoils make an ideal home for bacteria and micro-organisms. Because ADA soil is an organic soil, this aquasoil makes an active contribution to creating a balanced ecosystem in every aquarium. The shape of ADA soil pellets is such that they have a very large surface for bacteria to adhere to. This makes for ideal oxygen supply. This particular brand of aquasoil is known for retaining its shape and hardness. Because of this, a good circulation of oxygen, water and nutrients is almost guaranteed.
DOOA aquasoil
DOOA is our least expensive brand but that doesn't detract from its worth. Because of its low price, this brand of aquasoil is a good one to experiment with. Even people who are just starting out on this wonderful hobby can manage well with this aquasoil.
